Voiceover Vocal Health - Keeping Your Pipes Clean!

We're diving into a topic that's close to our hearts—keeping our precious vocal pipes in tip-top shape. As professionals in the industry, we know that our voice is our greatest asset. So, let's explore some tried-and-true techniques to ensure our voices stay healthy and strong.

First and foremost, hydration is key. It may sound simple, but drinking plenty of water is a game-changer for our vocal cords. Staying hydrated keeps them lubricated, preventing dryness and minimizing the risk of irritation and strain. So, grab that water bottle and make hydration a top priority! I love finding a favorite water bottle or two (I always misplace one) to personalize the water-drinking experience. ha!

Now, let's talk about a secret weapon that my friend Michelle Falanga uses: many voiceover ginger shots. These little elixirs are a powerhouse when it comes to boosting our immune system and maintaining vocal health. Simply blend organic ginger root, turmeric root (if available), and some organic lemons. Strain the mixture, freeze it in ice cube trays, and add a couple of cubes to your water each day. Not only does it taste refreshing (and uh, gingery), but it also provides a natural defense against illness. Give it a shot (pun intended) and experience the benefits for yourself!

Now, let's address the elephant in the room: throat coat tea. You've likely heard of it, but does it live up to the hype? Well, opinions vary. Some artists find it beneficial, while others, like myself, aren't huge fans. The taste can be divisive (Michelle is NOT a fan, but I enjoy it), and some may experience a slight coating sensation in the throat. If you're curious, give it a try and see if it works for you. Remember, what works for one person may not work for another, so trust your own judgment. Let’s just say, if you don’t like black licorice, you may not like Throat Coat.

Next, let's consider our surroundings. Avoid excessive talking in loud environments whenever possible. We all know how tempting it can be to shout over the noise at parties or events, but our vocal cords pay the price. Find a quieter spot to converse or take periodic breaks to give your voice a rest. Or do what I do, just smile and nod because you can’t hear what they're saying anyway.

And don't forget the importance of vocal warmups. While some of us may be guilty of skipping them, or genuinely don’t think they’re important, I’m here to tell you, they can make a world of difference. So, take a few minutes before a session to warm up your vocal cords. If you're not a fan of traditional warmups, try using lozenges or sipping on a warm drink like tea or water. These simple practices gently prepare your voice for the task at hand, ensuring you deliver your best performance.

Remember, we're all unique individuals with different needs. What works for one artist may not work for another, and that's perfectly okay. Take time to find the routine that suits you best. Listen to your body, experiment with different techniques, and pay attention to what keeps your voice happy and healthy.

We need to take care of ourselves and our vocal pipes! They are the instruments that bring our words to life, and we owe it to ourselves to keep them in prime condition. Drink that water, try those ginger shots, and find the practices that resonate with you.
